Every song tells a story, and every story has a song.
Each song from my CD, Like a Lover holds a special meaning for me. The songs didn’t all come at once, each in their own way is from a moment in time.
For me choosing material is an organic process. The challenge is in choosing the first song, then the others follow. It’s odd to say this, but they made themselves known to me, I just kept my eyes and ears open for the signs. As in life, the guidance we need will always present itself. Have I gone a bit cosmic on you? One of my favorite TV shows was My Favorite Martian. You can draw your own conclusions. :)
I’d like to share how a few of these special songs came to be on my recording.
Like a Lover – in the 90s I was in a country western band, the Lost Coyotes with guitarist, Tim Edwards. He made me a cassette tape of music, and on it was Like a Lover sung by Sarah Vaughan. I fell in love with this song by Dori Caymmi. I have a habit of writing down songs that I like, and this one joined the list.

Easy Living – this song came to my attention in the Clint Eastwood movie, The Bridges of Madison County. It was playing on the radio in the kitchen during a scene from the movie. I found it haunting. Maybe because what was happening in the movie made an imprint on my memory.

The Miller’s Son – I was a teenager when I saw Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music. I adored all the music from the show. I even purchased the complete musical score.

Swinging on the Moon – I really was drawn to the clever lyrics, and Bill Cunliffe’s arrangement of this Mel Torme’ tune gave it a fresh new life.

Memory after memory, every song fell into place. Each song tells a story, and each story has a song.
