Like A Lover

I was so taken by the music I ordered the score the next day…

With my CD, Like a Lover, I wanted to include a song from my theatrical roots. I just adore the musical theatre composer Stephen Sondheim. My two favorites are Company, which I was privileged to be in production many years ago. And A Little Night Music,(someday) composed of all waltz tempos. BTW, Send in the Clowns is from A Little Night Music.

I first saw a touring production in LA when I was eighteen, staring the movie actress Jean Simmons in the role of Desiree. I was so taken by the music I ordered the score the next day, which I still have.  The character, Petra, sings a song entitled the Miller’s Son. She is a young servant girl who has just made love in the grass with her employer’s naive son. As he sleeps, she sits under a tree dreaming of a different life and who she will marry. There are many verses to the song as she shares her philosophy on making the most out of life before it’s too late.

We all have many verses to our own song. Right now, it may be sizzling on the back burner. You might have already lived it and are ready to share with the world or whispering a bit of sage advice in someone’s ear. Maybe it’s still being sung. Take a deep breath in and let out the verses of your song. Enjoy The Miller’s Son. Arrangement by Bill Cunliffe, from my CD Like a Lover!  Available for download.
